The last couple of years the center of power in 5A Idaho high school football has been the Treasure Valley.

Two years ago Rocky Mountain beat Mountain View for the title and last year Mountain View return to beat Capital in the championship game.

Rocky Mountain and Mountain View are both again in this year’s 5A semi final playoff picture with Rocky hosting the Highland Rams of Pocatello tonight at 7p.m. and Mountain View facing Coeur d’Alene 5p.m. at the Kibbie Dome in Moscow.

The difference tonight from the last two years is the fact Highland is favored over Rocky Mountain and The Vikings of Coeur d’Alene are picked to upset Mountain View.

That’s all speculation and predictions right now but it suggests a shift of power in high school football.

Mountian View is 10-0 and Coeur d’Alene 8-2 but the Vikings lost games early because quarterback Colson Yankoff was injured. Since his return they are unbeaten and despite missing two games he had 19 passing touchdowns and 10 more rushing td’s. Yankoff is committed to Chris Petersen at Washington. The Vikings may have too much firepower for the Mavericks.

Highland comes to the Treasure Valley with a defensive end being sought by the likes of Ohio State, USC and more. Tommy Togiai is 6-3 and 300lbs, a handful.

Rocky will counter with Keegan Freeborn at guard, a 6-2 300 pound Boise State commit who was injured early but since his return the Grizzlies are averaging 379yds rushing a game, that’s 7.3 yards per carry regardless of running back.

630 The Fan will broadcast the Rocky-Highland game tonight at 7p.m. Jared Zabransky and I will have the call.

Also tonight in 4A semi final action Skyline of Idaho Falls is at Middleton and top ranked and undefeated Skyview is at Minico. Kickoff for both games is 7 p.m.
