The 2018 Idaho high school football season will look a little different as several teams are switching classifications.

Columbia, Nampa and Kuna, all currently 5A teams will drop to 4A and Skyview currently the #1 ranked team in 4A football will jump to 5A despite a petition to stay at the 4A level.

Another move will drop Mountain Home from 4A to 3A.

When the dust finally settles there will be ten teams in the 5A SIC: Boise, Borah, Capital, Centennial, Eagle, Meridian, Mountain View, Rocky Mountain, Skyview and Timberline.

In 4A SIC the teams would include: Bishop Kelly, Caldwell, Columbia, Emmett, Kuna, Middleton, Nampa, Ridgevue and Vallivue.

The new alignment was based both on enrollment and the struggles some schools have being competitive. In fact, four teams that will be 4A next year will actually have 5A enrollments, those are Nampa. Kuna, Columbia and Caldwell. However, if you look at history those schools have not been able to compete with the Rocky Mountains or Mountain Views and that was very much a concern for athletic directors on both sides of the scoreboard.
