ESPN Calls Coach Pete “Cantankerous and Irascibile”

Cantankerous and irascible, that’s how the ESPN broadcast team of Rod Gilmore and Mark Jones described Washington football coach Chris Petersen while broadcasting the Huskies game against Cal. The former Boise State coach had just spoken out about the Huskies late night kickoffs to appease ESPN.

Coach Pete apologized to the fans saying the late night kickoffs are painful for the program. ESPN didn’t take long to respond. Kirk Herbstreit said Petersen should be grateful for the exposure and Petersen should be thanking ESPN for having a relationship.

Apparently ESPN was so hurt by Petersen’s concern the sideline reporter criticized the Washington non conference schedule by lining up cupcakes on the sideline to represent Rutgers, Montana and Fresno State. Aside from being a lame stunt to spank coach Pete it was an insult to three other football teams who did not deserved to get caught up in ESPN’s pity party.

Asked about the reaction from ESPN, coach Petersen said he doesn’t regret any of his comments saying he spoke his mind and ESPN simply blew things out of proportion. At least Petersen is consistent because he wasn’t happy about late kickoffs while at Boise State. An 8:30 p.m. game Saturday night puts big dent in a blue collar fan base that see’s a Bronco game as a family affair but not when games end after midnight.

Ironically, ESPN just announced that Boise States home game against Wyoming October 21st will start at 8:15 p.m. but could slide to 8:30.

8:30 mountain time is kickoff for this Saturdays Boise State at San Diego State game but this time CBS sports is the late night kickoff culprit not ESPN.
