BOISE, Idaho – Redshirt junior running back Jay Ajayi was named one of 10 semifinalists for the Doak Walker Award, the SMU Athletic Forum announced Wednesday morning.

Also among the 10 semifinalists for the award are Ameer Abdullah (Nebraska), Javorius Allen (USC), Cameron Artis-Payne (Auburn), Matt Breida (Georgia Southern), Tevin Coleman (Indiana), James Conner (Pittsburgh), Melvin Gordon (Wisconsin), Devon Johnson (Marshall) and Duke Johnson (Miami).

Ajayi, a two-time Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week in 2014, currently ranks in the national top 10 in eight major categories: rushing attempts (first – 260), all-purpose yardage (fourth - 172.3 yards per game), scoring (fourth – 120 points), rushing touchdowns (fourth – 17), touchdowns (fourth -20), points per game (fifth -12.0 ppg), rushing yards (10th – 1,280 yards) and rushing yards per game (10th – 128.0 yards per game).

Ajayi has also caught 42 passes this season, which, combined with his 260 rushing attempts gives him a national-best 302 touches this season. Among FBS running backs his reception total ranks fifth while his total of 443 receiving yards is fourth.

Seven times this season he has rushed for at least 100 yards, with a season-best 219 yards in a Sept. 6 victory over Colorado State. Ajayi has scored three touchdowns in five of Boise State’s 10 contests this season while in seven games her has scored at least twice.

This season the Plano, Texas native has bulldozed into the top 10 of numerous Boise State single-season records. His 1,280 rushing yards this season rank sixth all-time while his 260 carries are fourth, just 36 away from breaking Brock Forsey’s 2002 benchmark of 295. Ajayi’s 20 touchdowns this season as well as his 17 scores on the ground each rank third and his 1,723 all-purpose yards are 10th.

The three finalists for the Doak Walker Award will be announced Monday, Nov. 25, and will be flown to Orlando, Fla. For the Home Depot College Football Awards , which airs live on ESPN on Dec. 11.

Boise State (8-2, 5-1 MW) heads to Laramie this weekend to take on Wyoming (4-6, 2-4 MW) in its penultimate regular-season contest. Saturday’s game kicks off at 8:15 p.m. MT on ESPN2.
