Stevens Ride for Preakness Breaks a Bone

Idaho native and Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens just missed out on riding in the Kentucky Derby when his mount “Royal Mo” didn’t have enough Derby points and was the 21st choice in a field limited to 20.

However Stevens and “Royal Mo” were preparing for the Preakness at Pimlico when Stevens heard a pop during a workout aboard “Royal Mo”.

It happened just as Stevens turned “Royal Mo” down the stretch at Pimlico and he quickly pulled up and stopped the workout.

“Royal Mo” had fractured a bone in his hoof and that is a career ending injury for the horse but since no other damage was done he’ll be able to lead a life as a stud horse.

At this late date it’s unlikely Stevens will be able to find another ride for the second leg of the triple crown.

Stevens is an Idaho native and learned the jockey trade while riding at Les Bois Park.
