In the 73 year history of the U.S. Women's Open golf tournament there has never been a player from the University of Idaho.

That is until this week. Idaho senior Sophie Hausmann is one of 29 amateurs competing at the Shoal Creek CC in Alabama.

Hausmann isn't among the leaders and most likely won't make the cut but she is making the most of the experience. Hausmann shot a 6 over par 78 in the first round, 11 shots behind a trio of leaders at 5 under par.

Nevertheless Hausmann said she played solid golf despite being a little nervous. Hausmann posted three birdies in her opening round and hit the green consistently but didn't land in the right spots on the green to make and up and down easier. She struggled getting the ball in the cup posting three bogey's and a double bogey at the 17th.

Hausmann is currently ranked 57th in the World Amateur Golf rankings and qualified for the US Open at a Seattle Sectional.
