Breaking news from Dallas claims the Cowboys have placed the franchise tag on former Boise State standout Demarcus Lawrence.

The Cowboys defensive end played under the tag last year, paying him $17.1 million on a one-year deal.

Mike Garafolo of NFL Network has warned Cowboys fans to "get ready for a standoff" as the two sides are not close on a long-term contract agreement.

By definition, the franchise tag is......In the National Football League (NFL), the franchise tag is a designation a team may apply to a player scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent. The tag binds the playerto the team for one year if certain conditions are met. ... The transition tag can only be used if the team does not use afranchise tag.

It's been reported that Lawrence would not play under a second franchise tag and the NFL is just coming off a season where Pittsburgh running back Le'Veon Bell sat out a whole year, there certainly has to be some concern other stars like Lawrence may well follow suit.
