Caleb Bennett entered the arena at the Ford Idaho Center last night as the top ranked bareback rider in the world. He's won more than $116,000 but when all was said and done his first ride at the Snake River Stampede left him in 8th place.

The defending Snake River Stampede bareback champion won't likely defend his title in 2018 and it really wasn't all his fault.

Anyone who doesn't think rodeo is a team sport is forgetting about the live stock.

Sometimes the cowboy is ready but the love stock isn't feeling all that lively come go-time!

Bennett drew such a horse last night and as a result his score of 79.5 suffered because the horse really didn't feel like competing.

A couple of good bucks out of the gate was all the pony had to offer and rest of the 8-second ride was in cruise control.

Easy for the cowboy to hang on, not easy to score big points. Bennett needed some help last night from his mount and didn't get it.

As a result the top bareback rider in the world may miss out on some of the record purse of $450,000.

The 103rd annual Snake River Stampede continues through Saturday.
