Two Former Broncos to Compete in World Track and Field Championships

Athletics - Olympics: Day 10

If you need me this weekend, I’ll be on my couch watching Track and Field.

I think I’ve watched the World Track and Field Championships every year since I started getting serious about running the 3200 my freshman year of high school.  Some years, I’ve personally known athletes in some of the long distance races.  Other years, I’m just watching for fun.  This year, I’ve got two very Blue and Orange reasons to watch the championships: Kurt Felix and Jordin Andrade. The two former Bronco Track and Field standouts are on the start lists for this year’s competition in London.

Felix will compete for Grenada in the Decathlon.  The Boise State alum has competed in two Summer Olympics. He failed to finish in the 2012 London games, scratching five events in the 10 event competition.  Felix made a comeback in Rio last year and was able to place 9th out of 25 competitors who finished all 10 events.  He’s seeded 6th going into this year’s IAAF World Championships.  The decathlon takes place over Friday, August 11th and Saturday, August 12th.

Andrade made headlines after his 400 meter hurdle preliminary heat at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.  He was originally disqualified for for hitting one of the hurdles with his foot.  I know that serving one season as a high school Track and Field official hardly makes me an expert, but when I saw the still photos of the moment they wanted to disqualify for, I had a good feeling he would win his protest.  The committee reinstated him and gave him a chance to run in the semi-finals.   He’ll compete for Cape Verde in the event again at the World Championships.  His first heat happens at 4:05 a.m. Boise time on Saturday, August 5th.
